Released in May 2016, the Vodafone Smart First 7 was designed to be the cheapest possible working smartphone, a device that could get first-time users onto Android with the absolute minimum outlay. It handles calls, texts and basic messaging apps. It is the most entry-level phone in our range, and we want to be completely clear about what it can and cannot do before you buy.

Display and size

3.5-inch TFT screen at 165ppi. Very compact and lightweight at 110g. The small size is genuinely useful for some buyers who find modern 6-inch phones too large. Display quality is basic but functional for calls, texts and simple tasks.

Performance

Spreadtrum SC7731G quad-core with 512MB RAM. This is very limited by 2026 standards. Calls, SMS and WhatsApp will work. Web browsing will be slow. Many modern apps will not install due to Android 5.1 and 512MB RAM restrictions. This phone is built for simple use only.

1- Is the Vodafone Smart First 7 still worth buying in 2026?
Only for very specific use cases. Calls and texts will work reliably. WhatsApp will function on most carrier networks. However, Android 5.1 is ten years old and many modern apps will not install or run. If you need more than a basic phone, we would recommend the Galaxy J4 or Galaxy A06 instead.

2- Does it support 4G?
No. The Smart First 7 is HSPA (3G) only and does not support 4G LTE. As UK networks continue 3G switch-off, this is an important limitation to be aware of. Check your carrier's current 3G coverage before purchasing.

3- Does it have a front camera?
No. It has a 2MP rear camera only. There is no front-facing selfie camera.

Yes. The Samsung Galaxy J4 offers 4G, a Super AMOLED display, a better processor and Android 8.0 for a modest step up in price. For most buyers it is a significantly better choice unless price is the only consideration.
